Virtual networking is the new normal for young workers.

Virtual networking is the new normal for young workers. Thanks to the ability to work from home and freely connect with professionals via video chat, in-person networking is becoming a thing of the past for the next generation of employees. According to a recent Handshake study, seven in 10 job seekers believe they don’t need to meet in-person to form a meaningful professional connection, while half of students prefer to interview virtually. Not only is virtual networking more accessible for Gen Z and Millennials, it’s more equitable, too. Handshake’s research found that virtual career events help level the playing field for students of color, women, LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities. Meanwhile, respondents note feeling more “seen” and psychologically safe online compared to in-person. Young job seekers and employees still value in-person interactions as well, but as they think about the future of work they’re prioritizing online connections and resources to take their career into their own hands.
