Summersalt is flipping the script on how swimwear is represented in the media. The direct-to-consumer women’s label put inclusion and diversity at the forefront of its first brand campaign, featuring 24 women of all sizes, races, identities, and abilities. The brand’s advertising includes a Black transgender woman, a woman with prosthetic legs, women with the skin conditions vitiligo and psoriasis, a Special Olympics gymnast, and a mom breastfeeding her daughter. For too long, swimwear advertising has favored an idealistic (and unrealistic) version of beauty, and now Summersalt (along with brands like Chromat and Good American) are working hard to ensure women of all identities are represented. YPulse’s new Representation in Action trend data shows that 77% of BIPOC 13-39-year-olds say when choosing what to buy, it’s important that products and their brands represent all types of people.
