A new YA novel may have gamed the system to hit number one on the New York Times Bestseller List. Handbook for Mortals’“surprisingly high sales figures” caught people’s attention (and suspicion) when the book reached number one on the coveted list within a week of hitting shelves. Not only is it Lani Sarem’s debut novel, it’s also the first novel from GeekNation’s publishing imprint. Another author raised concerns on Twitter, and heard from bookstores that large orders were placed only after the stores confirmed they reported their sales to the Times. Sarem has denied claims that there’s a “scheme to see it adapted into a movie,” and blames “reporting inconsistencies.” (The Verge)
