Collins’ top Words of the Year picks are—no surprise—Gen Z slang.

Collins’ top Words of the Year picks are—no surprise—Gen Z slang. Their official Word of the Year is “mogging,” which means to outshine someone or something, and comes from bodybuilding culture. (A term YPulse explained in our Health and Fitness report earlier this year!) That said, it’s become especially popular this year among viral alpha male content, from looksmaxxers to memes about them. Other shortlist mentions and new dictionary entries reflect the political and ecological state of the U.K. They include “Manchesterism,” PM Andy Burnham’s philosophy, “firewave,” “ghost job,” and, most soul-crushing of all, “P(doom)”—the “likelihood that artificial intelligence will cause the collapse of human civilisation.” A few lighter-hearted terms are being ratified, though; “fricy” for fruity-spicy flavors and “bixies” for bob-pixie blends.
