Gen Z and Millennial women are reinventing the Disney adult identity. The new era of the “Disney cool girl” looks more like dressing for a city street—where the vintage tee is ‘90s Disney—accented with ears and a few lowkey accessories. They’re saying goodbye to the heat-pressed vinyl quotes on shirts, princess-adjacent skirts, and character-inspired looks. One big inspiration for this shift is, perhaps surprisingly, a Disney exec, vice president of creative for the Americas at Disney Consumer Products Bobby Kim. His streetwear fashion background now informs vintage-inspired official merch that’s selling out. That has just a hint of irony; Kim sees this aesthetic developing out of consumers’ desire to not let the brand speak for them and dress more creatively. However, he says the Disney cool girls are his inspiration, too, so the “cool” vibe is going both ways. (The Cut)
