Another Gen Z liminal horror is coming to theaters. It Ends is a post-college road trip gone wrong in an infinite time-loop made by 28-year-old writer-director Alex Ullom. Like other “liminal space” horrors that have exploded with Gen Z in the last year, the movie has a purgatory vibe from driving forever and going nowhere that correlates to the young characters’ real anxieties about faith, life direction, and guilt. Ullom is calling his subgenre “hangout horror,” and while he may be joking it could genuinely appeal to Gen Z if their other recent picks are any indication. The movie is not actually new per se, though; it’s been available on Letterboxd’s “video store” and has been successful there, which is among the reasons it’s been picked up by Neon (another Gen Z fave) for theater distribution. A new director, not-quite-real setting devoid of people (at first), and real anxiety about feeling “lost” after graduation all add up to just the kind of horror Gen Z has been loving lately.
