Noisy venues may be pushing British Gen Z away from going out. New research from Oscar Acoustics suggests the “Gen Z isn’t going out anymore” narrative may have an unexpected factor at play: they simply can’t hear each other while they’re out. More than half (54%) of 18-24-year-olds say venue noise regularly prevents them from having conversations or enjoying their visit, +15pts more than over-55-year-olds. And they’re willing to use this problem to decide where they spend their time and money; 71% of 18-24-year-olds say an acoustic comfort rating (similar to a food hygiene score) would influence their choice of venue. Because of this, Oscar Acoustics’ managing director claims too much noise is costing U.K. businesses an estimated £40B. And there’s evidence that fixing the audio problem can make a difference. Music venues in Hackney that underwent acoustic treatment reported staff were more focused and less fatigued, while guests stayed longer. (Bar Magazine)
