Social media is fueling an expensive bridesmaid swag trend for Gen Z. For brides today, asking “Will you be my bridesmaid” has become a proposal moment, where friends are often presented with boxes full of gifts like silk pillowcases, jewelry, beauty products, and $130 candles. And with Instagram and TikTok feeds full of inspo for these pricey bridesmaid proposal gifts and Etsy stocked with affordable versions for brides on a budget, it’s starting to feel like an expectation. Of course, bachelorette parties have also gotten more elaborate, with themes requiring new outfits, décor, and accessories beyond the cost of the now-traditional weekend trip. And some brides are shelling out for bach-gifts like matching pjs for the bridal party as well. Now, TikTok content is encouraging brides to reach out to companies directly to ask for free products—one bride reports emailing over 400 to get bridesmaid gifts in exchange for social media posts.
