More than two thirds of Gen Z would cancel plans to spend more time online.

Jun 10 2026

More than two thirds of Gen Z would cancel plans to spend more time online. According to a new Marmalade Trust study of 18-29-year-olds in the U.K., young people are experiencing more loneliness, canceling plans, and favoring communication with AI over real people. Now, one in four people would rather speak to AI than to a human, while another 44% say they feel lonelier than they did a year ago, and 48% say social media has made them feel lonelier. These heavy feelings are impacting Gen Z’s mental health: half of young Brits said loneliness has damaged their mental health, and 42% reported lower confidence or self-esteem. (The Independent)
