Gen Z women outpace men in homeownership—but still, few young people are owners at all. According to a new NAR survey, 18-26-year-olds represent just 4% of homebuyers. But among that age group, single women accounted for 35% of all homebuyers between 2024-2025 compared to just 18% being single men. And no other gen had a bigger share of single women homebuyers than Gen Z. Across the board, experts say single women outnumber men in homeownership because of higher college attendance rates among women and a desire for security and independence. But regardless, to make buying possible, many young people look to family for financial assistance, while also looking for community grants, payment assistance programs for first-time buyers, or even pulling funds from their retirement savings.
