NYU students pushed back on Jonathan Haidt speaking at their graduation.

May 18 2026

NYU students pushed back on Jonathan Haidt speaking at their graduation. Last week, student government leaders sent a letter to the administration expressing that Haidt does not represent this class’s values. He’s known for calling young people “coddled” and an “anxious generation.” And while he’s an adamant supporter of free speech and in-person community spaces, some students feel claiming this is hypocritical after he did not show support for on-campus divestment protests in 2024. Students also raised objections based on Haidt’s “anti-DEI” history. As an NYU professor, he’s launched device-free space initiatives aligning with his belief that young people need to “reclaim” their attention span by using social media and technology less. He spoke about that exact attention issue on Thursday when he made his speech as planned, though there were reportedly boos from the graduates and even a few dozen getting up to leave.
