Gen Z is claiming Marseille as the new “it” destination. Expedia data shows a 25% increase in hotel searches for Marseille in summer 2024 from U.K. users—but this moment has been a long time in the making. The city’s popularity has been building for over a decade, starting when it was named the European Capital of Culture in 2013. That title unlocked more than €600M for new and renovated cultural spaces across the city. Now, the city is getting Gen Z attention. They see it as unapologetically urban, affordable, and packed with Moroccan, Algerian, and Tunisian influences that give it an authenticity other destinations lack—though locations like Club Tuba and the Cours Julien neighborhood have become social media staples. Think Jazz Age Antibes, but with cheaper tequila shots, louder music, and much better graffiti. (Wonderland)
