Gen Z plans to cut their holiday budgets by 23% this year, but they’re not gifting less, they’re gifting smarter.

Dec 08 2025

Gen Z plans to cut their holiday budgets by 23% this year, but they’re not gifting less, they’re gifting smarter. Instead of hitting the mall, many are turning to secondhand stores, with eBay reporting Gen Z showed the highest surge in interest for “pre-loved goods” this season. And that’s a notable peak, as eBay reports that 89% of all their global consumers plan to maintain or increase spending on “pre-loved goods” this season. McKinsey also found Gen Z is “much more likely” to buy secondhand in response to tariff news, making overseas shipping out of budget, while Boomers were actually less likely to consider it. One 23-year-old shopper summed up the mindset beyond the money too, saying buying something mass-produced feels impersonal. When every dollar counts, many Gen Z feel thoughtfulness comes first and the hunt for the perfect thrifted find tops a quick, brand-new buy. (The Boston Globe)
