TikTok is ditching the slick-back bun. (For a month.)

Nov 13 2025

TikTok is ditching the slick-back bun. (For a month.) “No Slickback November,” coined by beauty influencer Joy Burnett, challenges creators to skip gel and give their hairlines a break from the infamous “clean girl” look. It started last year as a cheeky spin on “no shave November,” but has turned into a full-blown hair health movement. Constant tension from slicked-back styles can cause hair breakage, thinning edges, and even traction alopecia—and alcohol-based gels aren’t doing anyone’s scalp any favors. Creators are documenting their month-long “gel detoxes” on hairstyle calendars, tracking what they wear each day—showing off claw clips, fluffy ponytails, and barrette twists instead. Of course, not everyone’s ready to let go. Some say slickbacks are their “saving grace” and suggested an alternative: “No straightener November.” But for most, it feels less like a sacrifice and more like permission to stop striving for perfection.
