Gen Z isn’t going totally sober—they’re having fewer drinks, but at higher alc levels.

Gen Z isn’t going totally sober—they’re having fewer drinks, but at higher alc levels. Time Out’s new Sip Happens Report reveals that 40% of Gen Z never drink at home, aligning with their gen’s sober identity. But when they go out, they’re 1.5x more likely than Millennials to seek high-ABV drinks. They’re embracing “selectively maximalist” drinking: fewer, but better drinks, with nearly 50% of them into high-ABV RTDs like Buzzballz. When they do stay in to drink, 86% say it’s about curating the vibe for at-home drinks, more than an actual desire for something to sip on. Gen Z treats mindful drinking like a numbers game, planning their drinks ahead (15% more likely than Millennials), and their top reason for not drinking is saving money, not health.
