“Fibremaxxing” is the latest TikTok wellness trend. Health influencers are filling TikTok with posts about “daily fibre goals,” “high-fibre food,” and “fibre rich” recipes. All of it encourages their viewers—many of whom are young—to ramp up their consumption of fibre. Online supermarket Ocado says it’s even led to a 60% increase in prune sales. High-fibre diets are linked to reduced risks of obesity and illnesses such as bowel cancer, and studies show that fewer than one in twenty adults in the U.K. currently meet the minimum recommended intake. That said, the British National Health Service recommends far less fibre intake than the 50-100g that fibremaxxing influencers advise on TikTok, but we know Gen Z highly trusts wellness influencers.
