“Chopped” is taking over Gen Z and Gen Alpha’s everyday vocab. Last week, YPulse reported on Gen Alpha’s evolving “brainrot” vocabulary, often including terms like “skibidi,” “rizz,” and “cap.” Gen Z and Gen Alpha’s “chronically online” and commonly used words typically overlap, and the latest reigning supreme for both gens? “Chopped,” a.k.a “a synonym for ugly or unattractive.” As with much of young people’s slang, the word is rooted in in AAVE (African American Vernacular English), and blew up on TikTok before making it to their IRL vocab. One video a young user posted, “six signs you’re a chopped woman,” has over 1.5M views. According to some young people, “chopped” doesn’t always apply to one’s physical appearance though—it can also apply to tedious tasks or anything they dislike, replacing the phrase “this sucks.” (NYT)
