KiiiKiii is a new K-pop group using early internet aesthetics to connect with Gen Z. Their latest concept for the single “Dancing Alone” is full of Y2K-era references—think pixelated graphics, lo-fi photos, Friendster-style profiles, and fake Craigslist ads for old tech like Game Boys and DVDs. Even though the members were all born after 2005, the group leans into nostalgia for a time they never lived through. This fits into a larger trend of Gen Z being drawn to older tech and early digital styles—like flip phones and printed photos—as a way to temporarily escape notification fatigue and push back against the constantly changing algorithm. So, even though neither the group members or their intended fans remember Y2K, it’s totally common ground—and even better, Gen Z is all about KPop right now thanks to K-pop Demon Hunters.
