A newly released movie is presenting a satirical and dark take on our virtual reality and not-so-distant future. Creative Control centers around an advertising agent who uses augmented reality glasses to envision his best friend’s girlfriend as his own—eventually blurring the lines of reality. Inspired by his own break-up that mostly took place through texts, the director aimed to examine the complexities of technological addictions. According to him: “The utopian vision of technology is that it’s connecting us. It only does that if we actually design it to connect us. But if you design it to be addictive, then it will only separate us, because what addiction always does is isolate the person.” (Fast Company)
