Gen Z-favorite #BookTok is going through a wave of AI controversy. Just when the #BookTok community thought they were done with scandals (after the disaster that was “A Million Lives Book Festival”) allegations of AI use and plagiarism are flooding their feeds. The romance book Beverly by Laura J. Robert, which was growing in popularity on the app, has been accused of using AI to plagiarize Obsessed by R.J. Lewis, using the tool to tweak Lewis’ version and pass it off as her own. Lewis even took to Instagram to bring light to the situation and calling it her “worst nightmare,” and Beverly has even been removed on Amazon following Lewis’ copyright infringement claim. Similar cases are circulating on the app, like when popular author Victoria Aveyard seemingly called out one of her peers for using AI to come up with story ideas, calling the act theft. While some Gen Z on #BookTok are seated for the drama, other users seem like they’re over the constant controversy. (NBC)
