A new investigation found almost 7K proven cases of U.K. university students using AI to cheat. While traditional plagiarism is declining, AI-assisted cheating is on the rise. The Guardian reports there was an average of 5.1 AI cheating cases per 1K students in 2024, but estimates suggest it could hit 7.5 by the end of this year. And these numbers potentially underestimate the real scale, as AI use is getting harder to detect and often goes unreported. With YPulse data showing 68% of university students use AI tools in their educational pursuits, and many universities still lacking proper systems to flag or track misuse, the challenge is growing. Still, some students see AI as a brainstorming or accessibility tool rather than a cheating shortcut, and educators are now tasked with rethinking assessment methods to encourage learning while staying ahead of AI tools.
