Microsoft’s teen artificial intelligence chat bot ‘Tay’ was launched, then quickly deleted this week after things went terribly awry. The bot could interact with users on Kik, GroupMe, and Twitter to target 18-24-year-olds with “Millennial slang,” and collect data to “develop [a] greater understanding of natural conversation for its user base.” Unfortunately, the internet had other plans. Tay—who could learn from her interactions and alter her responses—became a Hitler-loving racist thanks to the work of troll groups. This is why we can’t have nice things, internet.
