The bot could interact with users on Kik, GroupMe, and Twitter to target 18-24-year-olds with “Millennial slang,” and collect data to “develop [a] greater understanding of natural conversation for its user base.” Unfortunately, the internet had other plans. Tay—who could learn from her interactions and alter her responses—became a Hitler-loving racist thanks to the work of troll groups. This is why we can’t have nice things, internet.
