Google’s AI features are reportedly keeping Gen Z consumers shopping there. We know social media is a major driver of purchasing decisions for young people today, but where they go to actually buy things can be a different story. New data from Morgan Stanley shows 16-24-year-olds are increasingly starting on Google for their online shopping: 30% go to Google first, a +9pt increase from September 2024. Meanwhile, other online shopping platforms like Amazon, Walmart, and Facebook have reportedly taken a hit in the number of this age demo starting their shopping journey there. The jump could be due to 18-24-year-olds high engagement with the platform’s AI Overviews tool to summarize search results, which Google says may have increased the volume of commercial queries and grew Google Lens (a visual search tool) use by 10%.
