Don’t expect to see many teens working at the mall and boardwalks this summer. According to an analysis of government data, the number of 16-19-year-olds obtaining summer jobs in the month of May has been on a downward trend since the 1970s, and is down to 156,000 this year—a 14% decrease from 2015. Demand for seasonal young employees hasn’t been as high, and teens are opting to volunteer and enroll in educational programs to “pad their college applications” instead of working. However, experts feel the experience of a summer job is crucial for teens’ development and preparation for their future. (MarketWatch)
