Duo the Owl is back after his dramatic “death” and the internet’s help. Duolingo’s unhinged marketing strikes again—after weeks of mourning their beloved (and mildly threatening) green owl Duo, the app has officially brought him back to life. The saga started with a dramatic announcement of Duo’s “death” on Feb.11, followed by a bizarre investigation, a hit-and-run involving a Cybertruck, and ultimately a challenge for users to rack up 50B learning points on the app to revive him. And, of course, they did. Now, Duo has returned declaring, “Faking my death was the test and you all passed.” Though this kind of bizarre marketing seems like just another day in Duolingo’s chaotic brand strategy, it ended up being a genius engagement tactic which made one thing is clear: skipping lessons is never an option.
