Gen Z is facing harsh competition for landing internships. Pre-professional experience has become an essential career step for Gen Z, though there are actually fewer opportunities available to get it right now. A recent report from Handshake found that internship postings dropped by 15% on their site, but the number of applications per internships more than doubled. In turn, job boards are becoming a battleground, where the pressure to stand out as an applicant is high. Applicants are vying for limited spots as 72% of students see internships as the key to gaining experience and figuring out their career path. And while unpaid internships are (unfortunately) still common, companies offering fair pay are seeing the rewards: 82% of interns who felt fairly compensated say they’d be likely to accept a full-time offer.
