Gen Z and Millennials are joining board game clubs.

Dec 18 2024

Gen Z and Millennials are joining board game clubs. Twenty-somethings are joining clubs to play chess, backgammon, and mahjong, in an effort to combat loneliness and build real connections. While some are getting active with pickleball and running clubs, traditional board games are becoming more popular among younger gens. In the past year, board game events organized through platforms like Partiful have quadrupled, and Meetup groups for board games have been growing by about 10% each year since 2021. Many clubs, like Green Tile Social Club and Mahjong Mistress, are run by older gens who want to teach young players how to play. These clubs help young people socialize and connect with cultural traditions, and allow older generations to pass on their experience. (NYT)
