Even parents think it’s harder to be a teen now than it was 20 years ago.

Sep 20 2024

Even parents think it’s harder to be a teen now than it was 20 years ago. While teens most often say they think it’s harder to be a teen today (44%), 29% say they’re not sure. But parents are decided: 69% say it’s harder to be a teen today, and few in both groups say it’s easier or about the same. For parents of teens who say it’s harder today, the driving cause named in an open-ended question is social media (41%), though technology at large is a factor in two thirds of their reasons why. Among the teens who think it’s harder, high expectations, sometimes caused by social media, are the top reason they name. But this pressure is often cited as coming from adults, with fewer saying social media specifically is the reason it’s harder today. (Pew Research)
