For many children of immigrants, the harsh reality of living in the U.S. has led to a growing desire to leave the country behind. As the cost of living and a chaotic political environment take their toll, first-generation Gen Z Americans are feeling hopeless and overwhelmed in the country their parents aimed for a new start in. So much so that some are seriously considering, or already planning on, abandoning the “American dream” in favor of a new home—despite the things they may give up by leaving. Pew Research found that young Americans are more likely than older adults to believe that there are countries simply better than the U.S amid all of this. And the phenomenon of “doomism,” the stress, guilt, and other complicated feelings underlying it all, among Gen Z is reflected in popular social media posts from young people frustrated with the U.S. or giving advice on moving away.
