TV vs. Gaming: How Many Hours Teens Spend at Their Screens

Gaming in all forms has officially outpaced the number of hours teens spend watching TV every week… 

  • Teens are officially gaming more than they’re watching TV
  • They think playing games is simply more entertaining than watching shows
  • But they like watching TV and movies based on their fave games—so media brands can still benefit
Last year, YPulse warned that the TV industry should watch out as gaming increasingly dominated Gen Z’s screen time. This year, all teens 13-17-years-old play video / mobile games in some way, and the vast majority (91%) are gaming weekly—if not every day. As gaming takes up the bulk of their time (and interest) outside school hours, TV providers and streaming services are really battling with gaming brands and content for time on young people’s screens.    To see just how tight that competition is, YPulse’s annual Gaming survey asks 13-39-year-olds who say they play video games weekly or more often how many hours they spend on the following types of media each week. We found that teen players are playing computer, console, and mobile games each week more than Gen Z and Millennial adults: 91% of 13-17-year-olds play video / mobile games weekly or more compared to 86% of 18-39-year-olds.
