South Korea is pledging to give families $770 a month for a year as an incentive to have children. The country’s population data shows that “births shrank to 0.78 per woman last year, from 0.81 in 2021” and president Yoon Suk Yeol has called for an “emergency mindset.” Allowance for South Koreans with children under a year “will more than double, from 300,000 won (about $230) to 700,000” and another increase planned for 2024 will “bring it up to 1 million won, or roughly $770 per month.” But allowances aren’t the only changes being made to encourage families to have more children, “Yoon also discussed plans to expand childcare services, help newlyweds with housing, and cut health expenses for young kids.” Declining birthrates are happening all over the globe and YPulse’s own parenting data shows that 17% of Millennials say that they’re not interested in ever having children.
