Schools are bringing back teaching cursive.

Mar 03 2026

Schools are bringing back teaching cursive. More than half of the states now require or strongly suggest teaching cursive, up from 14 states in 2016. While tight schedules building in typing skills and meeting benchmarks for math, English, and science pushed cursive out of the curriculum in the last two decades, some are finding reasons to bring it back. For kids, cursive can help concentrate on fine motor skills and take their time writing, while for older students, it can be an advantage when learning to look at historic documents. Some teachers and politicians feel it’s an unnecessary mandate, considering the amount of time classrooms actually have to work this in or if all students will really benefit from it. But in the era of iPads and Chromebooks on every desk, some teachers say their students are enjoying a new challenge and “big kid skill.” (USA Today)
