Gen Z might be more willing to spend on things that look good on their feeds. According to one survey, Gen Z’s spending on non-essential items like clothes, beauty, and home decor has increased over the last year, even as many struggle with the job market and high rent. And while they might be cutting back on pricier “slop bowls” that don’t last past the meal (Chipotle and Sweetgreen are seeing slowdowns), Coach and the RealReal are reporting growth with Gen Z. Some brands believe that’s because Gen Z shoppers are more willing to spend on the things that make them look good on social media, like designer bags and yoga mats. While they’re not splurging constantly, their “always on, always judged” mentality leads to strategic splurges on personal brand boosters. YPulse has certainly said before that dressing for their feeds is a major trend, and that Gen Z worries about judgement on social media, so the theory could be correct. (Bloomberg)
