Gen Z has developed a color-coded system for emotional vulnerability on TikTok. If you don’t know what “yellow font” means, you might be “unc.” (Even though it just appeared in the last couple weeks.) The trend has creators literally using yellow font for captions, but also adding “yellow font btw” to videos where they’re sharing something deeply personal. Yellow font is a signal to viewers that the post is real and vulnerable, involving unfiltered feelings, raw admissions about mental health, and things they might not say out loud or don’t want to joke about. There’s also “pink font” emerging for content that’s relatable or love-adjacent, and “rainbow font” for chaotic or celebratory moments. The origins of it all are murky, but the function is the same as Reddit-esque tone markers like /gen meaning “genuine.” It’s a linguistic shortcut that says “this one’s serious” without having to spell it out, adding to Gen Z’s clear communication style.
