Gambling with “skins” has a unique, dangerous hold on young gamers.

Gambling with “skins” has a unique, dangerous hold on young gamers. “Skins gambling” refers to making bets—often a simple coin flip—to win exclusive in-game accessories for characters and weapons, which are worth tens of thousands of dollars in some cases. Particularly for players of Counter-Strike, which is known for its third-party market, skins gambling sites are heavily promoted. Dozens of the games top Twitch streamers are sponsored by these sites, reinforcing the allure of winning skins as status symbols among their young followers. And even though teens can’t legally gamble, many sites lack proper age verification processes, allowing anyone to participate in betting. This is especially dangerous for such a young audience to get into as a 2023 study found that skin gamblers scored more than twice as high on problem gambling behavior metrics compared to those involved in other forms of betting.
