Azar is bringing back video chatting with strangers. The sudden shutdown of Omegle in 2023 left young people globally in disbelief. And though not available in the U.S. yet, Match Group-owned app Azar is attempting to bring random video chat back, while addressing issues of nonconsensual nudity through moderation (both human and artificial intelligence driven). Although it isn’t specifically marketed as a dating app, it does aim to provide a space for young people especially to find engage in “real-time, spontaneous conversation.” The app primarily targets Gen Z, whose “lonliness epidemic” YPulse just recently reported on, as they may not have experienced similar, discontinued platforms—and may be enticed by the instant translation or ability to apply mask filters for anonymity.
