Racism in schools is significantly impacting students’ mental health. Research shows that students who have faced racism are more likely to experience poor mental health, a heightened risk of suicide, and increased substance use compared to those who have not. In a 2023 study, a third of students in grades 9-12 in the U.S. reported experiencing racism in educational environments, with young people of color having these experiences more than twice as much as White students. The most severe reports came from Asian students at 75%, followed by 46% of Black students, 39% of Hispanic students, 38% of American Indian and Alaska Native students, and nearly 38% of Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander students, compared to just 17% of White students.
