New LGBTQ+ dating apps are attempting to rival Grindr. Amid several new updates like paywalls and excessive ads, which have complicated user connections, Grindr is losing its foothold in the queer dating space. Although other popular choices like SCRUFF and Jack’d also have paywalls and ads, they are generally less intrusive—and many younger users find Grindr’s ads unhelpful, while other LGBTQ+ apps emphasize important messages like those about PrEP. Overall, Grindr seems to be passing its increasing costs onto consumers, which is particularly frustrating for young people given the current cost of living. So, while it remains the leading dating app for gay men in particular with nearly 14M monthly users, other apps for LGBTQ+ people at large are gaining traction. (Mashable)
