Southern Italy has the lowest percentage of young people in Europe. The lack of stable job opportunities for Gen Z and Millennials in the southern regions and islands of Italy, known as the “Mezzogiorno,” is leading to a brain drain and a decline in the region’s young skilled workforce. A recent report by Italy’s national statistics bureau, ISTAT, revealed that Southern Italy now faces a demographic challenge, with the lowest percentage of residents 18-34-years-old in the whole of Europe—largely due to high unemployment in these areas. Data from YPulse’s recent WE Employment and Career Goals Report also shows the number of young Italians who have a job is the lowest in the region. (Reuters)
