Today’s economy might actually be giving Gen Z teens a leg up in the job market. As a result of “one of the tightest labor markets in decades,” teen workers have more job options with companies being short-staffed—and they’re also earning higher wages as a result of the pandemic. Some states are also cutting labor restrictions so that teens can work increased hours and even more dangerous jobs. The U.S. Labor Department reported that “there are roughly 1.6 jobs open for every person that is unemployed…In normal times, that ratio is about 1:1.” The increase in places to work and wages are also allowing teens to be more selective when applying, giving them the upper hand when first entering the job market. YPulse’s Employment and Career Goals report data shows 41% of Gen Z is currently employed—an +11pt increase from last year. (Fortune)
