Netflix’s prequel Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is shaking up the franchise. Unlike Bridgerton, the Queen Charlotte prequel is grounded in reality—in the sense that the society it captures isn’t Georgian England but a reflection of our own. Critics of the series have argued that the first two seasons glossed over the race of some of the characters of color. While some liked the fact that diversity and inclusion was “normalized” in the show, others wanted historically accurate issues involving race and culture to be addressed in the show—and in this new season, the creators were able to capture audiences by finding a happy medium. Ultimately, the prequel presents Queen Charlotte in a way where she “can be understood in part as an avatar for her creator (Shonda Rhimes): a person of extraordinary abilities, whose identity as a Black woman doesn’t diminish her power within her sphere of influence so much as it creates complications that would not exist for white men.” (Time)
