The “Doble Quinceanera” trend has Latina women ringing in their thirties with the same splendor traditionally reserved for their fifteenth birthday. For children of immigrant parents, it’s important to celebrate the accomplishments and milestones they’ve reached that solidify the sacrifices their parents made for them. They feel an immense pressure to achieve the things their parents were denied, like a “college degree, generational wealth, or a positive sense of self in an imperialist country.” In order to celebrate their own personal growth, Latinas are throwing “doble quinceañeras” with their friends and family and going all out with attire, food, and music. One Guatemalan-American woman says, “It’s important to do it at 30 because it’s such a pivotal time in one’s life. You go from figuring it out to having a stronger sense of self.” (Refinery29)
