Dominican Millennial pastry chef Paola Velez is transforming the industry through meaningful activism with her non-profit Bakers Against Racism. Co-founded with two of her fellow chef friends, Velez kickstarted the organization following her struggles through unemployment during the pandemic. She noted how immigrant families and workers were treated unfairly during this time, and the murder of George Floyd ignited the idea behind Bakers Against Racism. Now, the non-profit has been able to reach “over 200 U.S. cities, 40 states, and four continents, raising over $2.5 million and counting for local anti-racist organizations, abortion funds, Ukrainian relief organizations, and more.” YPulse’s Causes / Charity and Activism report shows that Black Lives Matter and racism are the top social issues Gen Z and Millennials care about—and young BIPOC care about the issues that affect their communities the most.
