Young creators are growing wildly internet famous while also remaining anonymous.

Sep 28 2022

Young creators are growing wildly internet famous while also remaining anonymous. Twitch streamers in the U.S. are adopting the Asian trend of VTubing (derived from “virtual YouTuber”) where they “use avatars or images to portray themselves online while keeping their offline identities mostly hidden.” Some use avatars that resemble themselves, dress up in cosplay, or create cartoon versions of entirely new looking people/animals. The growing popularity of anonymously VTubing for live and on-demand streams has to do with many creators receiving backlash for revealing their appearance, thoughts, and ideas, making them want to switch up their online presence—on entirely new platforms. Twitch reports that VTubing viewership has “more than quadrupled from January to August this year.” YPulse research shows that Gen Z and Millennials are getting burnt out from perfection pressure on their current social apps—and new ones are grabbing their attention.
