Black students are choosing to attend HBCUs over Ivy League colleges and predominantly White schools.

Jun 21 2022

Black students are choosing to attend HBCUs over Ivy League colleges and predominantly White schools. YPulse’s Education report found that a quarter of Black young consumers who are interested in college say that diversity of students and faculty is a quality they consider when choosing a school. According to Common App, HBCUs in the country have experienced a recent boom. Applications for a cross section of Black schools increased nearly 30% from 2018 to 2021—outpacing the increases of many other schools. Submissions using the Common Black College Application, which is exclusively for HBCUs, are expected to reach 40,000 this year—quadruple the total in 2016. For many of the Black students opting to go to HBCUs like Morehouse College or Spelman College over Ivy League colleges or other schools, their decision has been shaped “not only by the election of the first Black president but also by political and social strife that threatened the lives and liberties of Black Americans.” And families have embraced historically Black colleges due to concerns about racial hostility, students’ feeling isolated in predominantly White schools, and shifting views on “what constitutes the pinnacle of higher education.” (NYT)
