Black families who are frustrated by White-washed history classes in public schools are choosing to homeschool their kids.

Mar 08 2022

Black families who are frustrated by White-washed history classes in public schools are choosing to homeschool their kids. For years, social studies classes have brushed over the real Black history. Now, some Black families are taking matters into their own hands by homeschooling their children to have a better control of their education and teach them “a deeper understanding of history.” The increase in racism during the pandemic, school districts removing books by Black authors in the curriculum, and the fact that only 7% of public school teachers are Black, have shaped and confirmed many Black parents’ decision to homeschool their kids. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey, the percent who reported homeschooling increased from 5.4% in April 2020 to 11.1% in October 2020. The increase was significant among Black families: About 3.3% were homeschooling in spring 2020 and 16.1% were homeschooling by fall 2020. According to one professor: “Homeschooling has become such a refuge for many families, Black families in particular, that they don’t have to go to the under-resourced school that they were assigned. They have an option where someone can create for them a really positive, nurturing, learning environment.” (TIME)
