The MLB is pledging millions of dollars to support Black players in the league. According to the New York Times, the percentage of Black players in major leagues has dwindled from a high of around 19% in the early 1980s to about 8% now. Meanwhile, YPulse’s Scouting Next Gen Sports Fans trend research found that only 26% of Black 13-39-year-olds say they have participated in baseball. As a way to build Black participation in the sport, the MLB is pledging a 10-year commitment and donating up to $150 million to the Players Alliance, a nonprofit formed last summer by more than 100 former and current Black players as a response to George Floyd’s death. The league will begin its financial donations in 2023, with $10 million annually for ten years and an additional $5 million in matching contributions to the Players Alliance’s fundraising. (NYT)
