Education has experienced serious setbacks during the COVID era. According to Renaissance Learning Inc. and NWEA, there has been widespread performance declines since the start of the academic year—particularly in math. One of the studies analyzed reading and math scores for more than five million students in first through eighth grades who took their assessments last year, and showed that learning declines were “particularly acute” for fifth and sixth graders, who “started the year 12 or more weeks behind their expected performance in math.” Meanwhile, the other study reported results from nearly 4.4 million students who took their assessments—and fourth and eighth graders’ math performance slid compared to their peers the previous winter. The largest declines were among late-elementary and early-middle schoolers. However, reading stayed relatively steady. (WSJ)
