| Airlines are coming out of “crisis mode” as bookings start to (very) slowly rise again. During the pandemic, experts predicted that it could take several years for airlines to “rebound” to pre-pandemic business. But on the eve of a new year, there are hopeful “signs” as airlines gear up for a “long, inching” recovery. According to Airlines for America, passenger volumes are still down roughly 70%, but United noted a “light at the end of the tunnel” this month with current bookings for Q3 in 2021 only down 40% year-over-year. In the meantime, airlines like American, United, and Delta are ramping up their safety protocols by offering COVID rapid testing on specific routes or continuing to block middle seats. Others have changed their marketing to convey a more hopeful message for the future, while also offering sales and promotions to keep travelers interested. YPulse’s Travel report found that 37% of 13-39-year-olds say where they travel is influenced by what safety precautions airlines are taking, while 32% say they are influenced by affordable airline tickets.
