Gen Z isn’t discovering music in stores or on the radio. Vice’s Noisey interviewed a handful of teens and twentysomethings and found that their sources ranged from Twitter to Spotify, with many relying on streaming services and YouTube to suggest content. One explained, “I’ll stream stuff on YouTube and follow whatever suggestions pop up on my home page.” When Ypulse surveyed young consumers on their music discovery behavior, 60% of 13-17-year-olds and 59% of 18-24-year-olds told us they discover new music through YouTube.
